When Hyundai built the 2012 Sonata, they kept their eye on reliability to create a car you could trust. Their efforts largely paid off, but that doesn’t mean problems don’t arise. When they do, the carmaker sends out recall notices and service bulletins to help you get the right repairs.
Does the 2012 Hyundai Sonata have recalls on its engine?
Yes, as of September 2020, there are two recalls that can affect the performance of the engine, causing complaints like:
- Knocking noise coming from the engine
- Engine failure from inadequate oil flow
- Fuel leak from the high-pressure pipe
Fortunately, you can learn all you need to know about 2012 Hyundai Sonata recalls in this article. Then, you can get all the necessary repairs completed to keep your car in excellent condition through the years.
Leftover Debris From Machining Could Cause Engine Failure
NHTSA Recall ID: 15V568000
When building the naturally aspirated 2.4L or turbocharged 2.0L engines for the 2012 Sonata, the manufacturer may have left metal shavings inside the block. As the engine runs, that debris circulates through the block and often ends up stuck in the oil galleries.
With those internal passages blocked, the connecting rod bearings do not receive enough oil to keep them cool and well lubricated. As a result, the bearings could fail and cause catastrophic damage to the engine.
Technicians start repairing this problem with an inspection of the engine. If they find signs of metal shavings, they may go ahead with the replacement of the short block. They must swap over the head, intake manifold, and other parts as needed for the install.
Potential Gas Leak From Improperly Installed Fuel Pipe
NHTSA Recall ID: 18V934000
While replacing engines affected by residual metal fragments in the block, technicians may inadvertently damage the fuel pipe. It’s also common for this pipe to get improperly torqued down or simply misaligned.
As a result of those issues, the pipe could leak fuel at a rapid rate. If the leaking fuel comes into contact with hot engine components or near a spark, a fire could start, resulting in severe injuries and damage to the car.
Technicians can repair the issue in full by inspecting and replacing the damaged fuel pipe. They will need to follow the proper torquing procedure to create a tight fit that reduces the risk of leaks.

Great Car
Has everything I would possibly need inside my 2012 2.0 Limited turbo Sonata. Had the engine replaced through the recall, though the dealership forgot to hook the turbo back up. The new engine installed only lasted 2.5 years, with oil changes current. The dealership and manufacturer would not replace the engine and offered to fix it for 6k; therefore, I am leasing a car from a different manufacturer due that the engines aren't fixed or replaced when it fails. Great pick up, smooth ride and luxury. The car itself is still in excellent condition and everything else works and I will miss it immensely when I sell it/junk it. When it runs, I wouldn't want any other vehicle. The only reason for the 4 instead of 5 stars is due to the engine issue (#4 cam is scored, runs rough atm)

Good car
Best car I ever owned. Got through recall OK. 15THMay22 loss of some power turning corner, regained and at top of hill loss of power again and for 1st time engine light, than oil light came with knocking. It appears the crankshaft and some rods where the problem. No good 2nd hand engine available and not worth putting in a new engine. Car owed me nothing, but it was a sad day to see it go to the junk dealer. Still miss it.
