With Expend4bles due in theatres and reported to shake up the franchise, there’s already those looking ahead to The Expendables 5 and what the future could bring after the upcoming Sylvester Stallone sequel. Stallone gathered some of his co-stars and rivals from his 1980s action movie heyday to create 2010s The Expendables. Since then the franchise expanded to a trilogy that includes action stars from multiple eras including Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, Jason Statham, Jet Li, and even Wesley Snipes.

Expend4bles, the fourth movie in the film series, is due in September 2023 and features a cast list just as vast and star-studded as the preceding trilogy. The Expendables 5 would directly follow whatever’s in store in the upcoming release, so of course details are scarce until The Expendables 4 arrives. However, there’s already been some discussion about the possibility of The Expendables 5. It seems highly likely that whatever Expend4bles has in store, it won’t be ending the franchise just yet.

There still hasn’t been any concrete news on The Expendables 5, but it’s also not been written off by producers Kevin King-Templeton and Les Weldon. Speaking to Daily Express, the Expend4bles producers were candid about the chances for The Expendables 5:

Nothing is off the table. We don’t know. It’s all about the fans.

While this response is far from a confirmation that The Expendables 5 is greenlit and confirmed, it does at least show that producers and possibly even studio Lionsgate are prepared to keep making Expendables movies as long as there’s an audience demand. The Expendables 3 was considered lackluster both in terms of audience reception and box-office. It’ll likely be down to the performance of Expend4bles when it comes to deciding the fate of The Expendables 5. However, as Weldon and King-Templeton’s comments prove, if the fourth movie does well then a fifth Expendables franchise entry isn’t off the table.

The Expendables 5 Isn’t Confirmed

The Expendables 5 isn’t confirmed, and no future installments in The Expendables franchise have been greenlit beyond the upcoming 4th movie. This may well change depending on how well Expend4bles performs at the box-office.

The Expendables 5 Cast

The cast of The Expendables 5 will likely be one of the movie’s biggest talking points if it goes ahead. Sylvester Stallone has reduced his role in The Expendables franchise for Expend4bles, handing over the reigns of cast lead to Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas. Stallone’s Barney Ross has been a mainstay of The Expendables since the beginning alongside Statham, so it will be interesting to see how Lee Christmas will fair as the central character without him (there are even many theories that predict Barney Ross will die in Expend4bles).

Aside from Sylvester Stallone’s possible absence and Jason Sttham in the central role, the rest of the cast of The Expendables 5 would be filled out by turning characters from previous movies as well as new additions (which, at this point, can’t be predicted). Depending on what happens to their characters in the fourth movie, the following cast members would likely return for The Expendables 5:

Unlike the cast, the plot of The Expendables 5 is impossible to predict, and depends entirely on the ending of Expend4bles. The only certainty seems to be that the story will focus much more on Jason Statham’s Lee Christmas, and the Sylvester Stallone’s Barney Ross likely won’t be present at all. Everything about The Expendables 5 story beyond that is, at this point, a complete mystery.
