Summary
- Blue Beetle's 2023 movie was a well-received DC film in recent years, and prompted the development of an animated series.
- The TV show will build on the movie but with a different story, aiming to fit into the new DC Universe.
- Future tie-ins with Peacemaker and Booster Gold could be expected, creating the potential for Jaime Reyes to intersect with the larger DCU.
One of the newest heroes from the DCEU is set to get their own DC Universe TV show through DC Studios with a Blue Beetle animated series in development. While it may not have been a box office hit, 2023's Blue Beetle movie became the most well-received DC superhero release out of the films that came out in the last three years. As DC Studios is moving on to James Gunn's DC Universe, the co-CEO made it clear that Xolo Maridueña's Jaime Reyes would be part of the new franchise.
Deadline reveals that DC Studios and Warner Bros. Discovery are currently in early development on a Blue Beetle animated series with Miguel Puga working as the showrunner and director. Cristian Martinez is attached to write the Blue Beetle series, while the movie's director Angel Manuel Soto and scribe Gareth Dunnet-Alcocer will be executive producing the show. As of right now, none of the Blue Beetle movie actors are attached as "many things are still in flux including contracts for any main cast," but Deadline notes, "multiple have been approached and DC has received a positive response regarding returns."

Maridueña made a response not long after the Blue Beetle news came out, seemingly confirming his involvement. At the time of this story's publication, Gunn has not commented on the story.

How The Blue Beetle Animated Series Can Fit Into The DC Universe
According to Deadline, the Blue Beetle TV show will "build on the movie" and will "divert from telling the same story." Since Blue Beetle was made under a different Warner Bros. era, Gunn had no creative involvement, even though the 2023 film was able to stand on its own without necessarily feeling like a DCEU installment. As Blue Beetle focuses on retroactively being fit into the new DC Universe, there are numerous ways that the animated series can tie itself into the franchise.
Given that Gunn's Superman movie comes out next summer, the Blue Beetle animated series could easily pick up sometime after the David Corenswet-starring adventure, as it follows Jaime now being surrounded by heroes in the world. Maridueña has even stated that he wants to see Blue Beetle in the DC Universe and get involved with John Cena's Peacemaker. The Blue Beetle animated show could easily set up a natural point for Jaime to eventually show up on Peacemaker in a future season.
The Blue Beetle series could also softly set up the Booster Gold live-action show by finally tackling the big Ted Kord mystery from the end of the film. With Ted's ties to Booster Gold in the comics, the Blue Beetle animated show could also naturally bring him and Jaime into the fold. Hopefully, more news on the Blue Beetle series, which will presumably air on Max, will arrive sooner rather than later.
