"After more than 20 years of being a bedside nurse, I decided to go back to school and earn my BSN. This has been a lifelong goal of mine. I raised my children first and now that they are grown, I decided to put me first. "I worked full-time while completing this coursework. It was stressful and time consuming, but so worth it! The amount of joy and accomplishment I felt when I realized I had passed my last paper is something that I will remember for the rest of my life! "I work to inspire my children to always shoot for their goals and that there is no time limit to obtaining them. I want them and other new nurses to know that you never have to stagnate in a career. I feel a renewed sense of joy and passion in my work. I can't wait to use these skills I have learned thru this program to help grow my shared leadership involvement at my facility. Helping other nurses understand that they have a voice and can make a difference is where I will focus my work next. I can't wait to begin!"We are inspired by Sherry Edinger Compton, who received her BSN (Bachelor of Science, Nursing) at our Anaheim commencement earlier this year. To help even more people like Sherry, WGU is launching a newly redesigned RN-to-BSN program that's designed to be completed in only one year. Plus, we're offering a special, limited-time scholarship opportunity to celebrate the care shown by nurses across the USA. Today marks an extraordinary milestone: the 100th commencement of Western Governors University! As we celebrate this historic moment, we’re reminded of the incredible journeys our graduates have taken. From balancing work, family, and studies to overcoming personal challenges, every graduate has a unique story of perseverance and triumph.Claudia Romo Edelman, our inspiring Keynote Speaker, reminded us, "If you made it to today, you can do anything. Your graduation today gives you the key to be the pilot of your own destiny and drive as far as you want toward unlocking your full potential."Captain Carly Donner, a graduate of our MS in Cybersecurity program, shared a powerful insight: "Most of all, it made me realize that it is not just the certificates or the credits that make a degree valuable. It is the journey and experiences you took to get here."Byron Tate, who earned his MS in Management and Leadership, emphasized the importance of kindness and positive change: "If this world is to change, it will be done with Aloha. Pure kindness spread by educated individuals will surely be the catalyst for that change."Lisa Hallam, graduating with an MS in Healthcare Administration, reflected on the doors that education opens: "Your advanced degree will open many more doors and opportunities. It will allow you to influence those around you."Jenifer Oldright, an MA in English Language Learning graduate, encouraged us to embrace life’s challenges: "Keep surprising yourself. Keep doing hard things. Embrace the unexpected journey of life ahead with the same grit and tenacity that brought you here today."And Crystal Pickering, a BSN graduate, summed it up beautifully: "Through my journey at WGU, I’ve learned to embrace the hard things and keep moving forward."Congratulations, Night Owls! This is just the beginning. Your determination and resilience have brought you to this moment, and now it’s time to take what you’ve learned and make a lasting impact in your communities and the world.#WGU100#WGUGrad

As we gather to celebrate 2,097 graduates in Salt Lake City on August 17, 2024, we’re reminded of the incredible diversity, resilience, and dedication that defines our student body. From our oldest graduate at 75 to the youngest at 17, each of these individuals has a unique story of perseverance and success. More than just numbers, these graduates reflect the heart of WGU: 63% come from underserved populations, 37% are first-generation college students, 37% identify as students of color, and 13% hail from rural areas. The average age of 37 speaks to the fact that it’s never too late to pursue your dreams. Join us in celebrating these amazing achievements and the bright futures ahead.
